Last night on MSNBC, DNC hack Karen Finney was in anguish when informed that in Alabama, 49% of working women voted for Rick Santorum. She then went on to insinuate that these women are just ignorant of the real message. She said, “yes, there’s the economy, but if you’ve got to worry about basic health care, how are you going to be able to do what you need to do as far as having a job, paying your rent, and taking care of your kids.”
What these progressives fail to understand is that conservative men and women believe that a robust economy is the key to enabling them to earn a living and provide food, housing, and health care for themselves and their families.
Daniel Henninger, in a revealing article in the Wall Street Journal, describes the catalyst to the Santorum surge.
What Mr. Santorum has discovered in this campaign is that for a large number of voters, a connection has surfaced between Barack Obama’s economic policies and the issue of personal freedom. The potency of the latter is what’s new, and a vulnerability for this presidency.
Rick Santorum has linked these concerns about the status of personal freedom directly to ObamaCare and beyond that to the broader policy legacy of Obama administration.
Henninger then explains how Santorum has been connecting with voters and energizing supporters by tearing into Obamacare.
Mr. Santorum didn’t get this response by discussing health-insurance exchanges and guaranteed issue. He told these people that ObamaCare “is usurping your rights. It is creating a culture of dependency. Every single American will be dependent on government, thanks to ObamaCare. There is no more important issue in this race. It magnifies all that is wrong with what this president is trying to do.”
Finally, Henninger says what more and more people are coming to realize.
Rick Santorum should stay in the race, repeating from now till summer the perverse link between the ObamaCare mandate and the American idea of freedom. It looks like the best argument the GOP nominee will have for a win in November.
A new Santorum video has the Romney campaign even more concerned and echoes the sentiment of Henningers article.
I saw this exchange between Newt and David Gregory on “Meet the Press” this morning and this is how the Republicans need to handle the biased left wing media if they are to win in November.
Presidential candidate Rick Santorum addressed Arizona Republicans yesterday and effectively outlined our choice in November. Santorum, despite facing a full frontal attack by the main stream media and those in the Republican establishment, continues to best connect with voters.

Unlike Romney (a corporatist) or Gingrich (always in search of big solutions involving Federal government such as job training, moon colonies, etc.) Santorum’s vision for the American comeback relies on his belief in us and our proven ability, if unhindered by government, to fuel our recovery.
In Iowa this past December, Mitt Romney successfully kneecapped Newt Gingrich with a barrage of negative and arguably inaccurate advertisements. Then after Newt rebounded in South Carolina, Romney engaged in an advertising campaign that Gingrich referred to as carpet bombing to annihilate Newt in Florida to the extent he has not yet recovered. Given these results, one might think that this is a winning strategy for Romney. But a closer look uncovers that this strategy has cost Mitt more than money, with every attack the Republican front-runner has seen his favorable ratings plummet. In a new survey, 54% of Republicans said they hold a favorable opinion of Romney, while 67% said the same in January. Among all Americans, 34% described the candidate as likable, down from 41% last month.
Romney is quickly creating a persona of a ruthless, vicious executive who will destroy those who would stand in his way through any means, honestly or if necessary, dishonestly. Now he has turned the big guns of the Romney machine on Rick Santorum, attacking him on his record on earmarks. In my opinion this is a huge mistake as this attack will cause Romney’s favorability rating to sink even lower and by targeting Santorum’s record on earmarks, he is inviting his opponents to counter attack Romney on his own horrid record on earmarks.
We have already highlighted Romney’s earmark abuse during the Salt Lake City Olympics here. Now we are learning how Governor Romney worked closely with the mostly Democrat congressional delegation from Massachusetts to secure federal earmarks.Under Romney’s leadership, Massachusetts sought tens of millions of dollars in earmarks for transportation projects. The AP has highlighted his record in a recent article.
A prime example was the $30 million his administration requested to renovate the historic Longfellow Bridge over the Charles River between Cambridge and Boston.
Romney’s transportation secretary, Daniel A. Grabauskas, asked a House committee to include the money in a transportation spending bill – the same earmark-packed bill that sparked public furor and became a symbol for Washington’s spending habits when Congress passed it in 2005.
Romney’s new attack on Santorum is ill-advised. First because this tactic is reducing his favorability ratings and hurting his chance to defeat Obama in November, and secondly because when it comes to earmarks, he is the proverbial stone-thrower who resides in a glass mansion.

First I will say my Governor Bob McDonnell delivered a fantastic speech and took advantage of his CPAC moment to introduce himself to the nation. He eloquently outlined how his adherence to conservative principles has rewarded the citizens of the Virginia Commonwealth and resulted in budget surpluses and a #1 rank in job creation. He also outlined his families American military service from his grandfather to his daughter in Iraq.
Next Rick Santorum addressed the crowd and delighted the crowd and earned several standing ovations. Santorum effectively outlined what it will take to defeat Obama in November and how only he offers the boldest contrast on Obamacare, energy/manufacturing, and environmental regulations that will be necessary to defeat Obama.
Santorum is the only candidate who has called for medical savings accounts and consumer based health care reform solutions, was against TARP, and has not advocated for economy killing, carbon tax schemes based on the fallacy of man-made global warming.

Foster Friess introduction of Rick Santorum at CPAC 2012 began with the following joke which summed up Santorum’s competition quite well;
Over at the bar a couple doors down a consevative, a moderate, and a liberal walked in and the bartender said, What’ll you have Mitt?
We have all felt it. Most of us have fought it. The establishment drumbeat telling us that we must get in line and support the candidate they claim is most moderate and therefore the most electable. Deep down we know this will lead to failure; we have seen it before. In recent history we got in line behind Bob Dole and we failed, we got in line behind John McCain and we failed. Now Karl Rove and the Republican establishment are once again beating the drum and telling us who we must nominate, but this time as in 1980, we have a candidate who is not afraid to propose bold ideas and tailor a plan to benefit all Americans and to get America back to work by working together.
